Quick answer

Model Y for most campers, Model Y L for the longest Tesla mattress

For sleeping inside the car, the Model Y is the usual pick: it has a liftgate, rear seats that fold flat and the widest choice of mattresses. The Model Y L has a six-seat floor that Tesla calls ideal for camping, and its Tesla mattress is the longest one Tesla sells for a car cabin. A Model 3 also works, but its rear opening is a trunk lid. Tesla no longer builds the Model X or Model S, so you buy those used. In a Cybertruck you sleep in the bed under the tonneau cover or in the rear cabin, where the seat cushions fold up.

Tesla does not publish a load-floor length for any of its cars. The one exception is the Cybertruck bed. To compare the cars for sleeping, we use the body opening, the rear seats, the cargo volume with the seats folded and the size of Tesla's own mattress for each car. Tesla's mattress size is the closest official guide to the flat length inside the car.

Tesla gives different cargo figures on different pages. For example, the Model Y page says 74 cu ft, the compare page says 76 cu ft and the owner's manual says 74.8 cu ft. In the table we use one source for every car: the "Dimensions" page of the owner's manual, with the rear seats folded where the manual gives that figure. Tesla uses model years, not "Juniper" or "Highland". We use Tesla's names and add the owner nickname once.

Older cars: Tesla says its Model Y mattress fits every Model Y except Model Y L, so it also fits 2020–2024 cars. Tesla’s Model 3 mattress fits 2024+ cars only. For a 2017–2023 Model 3, the Snuuzu Model 3 and the Havnby CloudCore list the car.

The mattress column lists the main products in our reviews. The Tesla mattress size chart gives the size of each one.

Model Y: the car most mattresses are made for

On its Model Y page, Tesla tells owners to fold the second-row seats flat for bikes and camping equipment. The same page names Camp Mode for a night in the car.

In the 2025+ Model Y (often called Juniper), the second row is split 60/40. Cars with power seats fold the backs flat with a switch on the seat or on the left side of the rear trunk. Other cars use a release strap on each outer seat cushion. The 7-seat version also folds its third row. With the second row folded, Tesla gives 71.4 cu ft (2,022 L) for the Premium and Performance cars, a little more than the base car in the table.

You can set and save the liftgate opening height. The manual warns that the liftgate may not open fully on a slope or in cold weather.

Tesla says its Model Y Air Mattress fits all Model Y cars except Model Y L. More mattresses in our reviews list the Model Y than any other Tesla. Read the best Model Y mattress guide to compare them.

Model Y L: the longest flat floor with a Tesla mattress

Tesla has no separate page or owner's manual for the Model Y L. The Model Y 2025+ manual covers it as the "Model Y L (6-Seater)". At 195.6 in (4,969 mm), it is about 7 in longer than the Model Y Premium, and its wheelbase is about 6 in longer.

The six-seat cabin has two captain seats in the second row and a powered third row. A switch on the left side of the trunk folds both rows. You can also fold the third row from the rear touchscreen. The manual "Rear Trunk" page says: "To create a uniform floor surface (ideal for camping) in the cargo area: Fold the second and third row seats."

A standard Model Y mattress is not made for this car. Use the Model Y L mattress from Tesla or the Havnby FlatCore Model Y L.

Model 3: a sedan with a long Tesla mattress

The Model 3 is a sedan. Tesla calls the rear opening a trunk. On the 2024+ Model 3 (often called Highland), the trunk is powered and you can set its opening height. Tesla gives no figure for that height.

The rear seat is split and folds forward. The manual says that you may need to move the front seats forward for the seat backs to fold completely flat. The manual gives no cargo figure with the seats folded.

Tesla's Model 3 mattress fits 2024+ cars only. For a 2017–2023 car, the Snuuzu Model 3 lists every Model 3 year. Havnby sells one CloudCore size for Model S, 3, X and Y, but Havnby warns that it can stay sloped in a Model 3 or Model S. Compare the options in the best Model 3 mattress guide and in Model Y vs Model 3 mattresses.

Model X: the largest cabin cargo area, bought used

Tesla's Model X page says: "Model X is no longer in production." Pre-owned and inventory cars may still be on sale.

The Model X has the most cargo volume inside the cabin of the cars in the table. The 6-seat car gives 88.0 cu ft (2,492 L) with the second row in its cargo position and the third row folded. The 7-seat car gives 83.9 cu ft (2,375 L). The manual describes fold-flat bench seats only. For the 6-seat car with two separate second-row seats, we found no fold-flat instructions.

The manual says not to rely on the liftgate to sense an obstacle when it opens or closes. Check for branches and low roofs above the car before you open it.

Tesla sells no Model X mattress. See the Model X mattress guide and the Snuuzu for Model X page.

Model S: a liftback with flat rear seats, bought used

Tesla's Model S page also says that the car is no longer in production. Unlike the Model 3, the Model S has a liftgate. Tesla's page lists a hands-free liftgate and second-row seats that fold flat.

A switch in the trunk releases the rear seat backs. You then push them down until they lie fully flat. The Model S has the smallest folded cargo figure of the liftgate cars in the table.

Tesla sells no Model S mattress. Snuuzu sells its Model Y mattress as a cross-fit for the 2021+ Model S. Havnby's CloudCore lists the Model S, with the slope warning above.

Cybertruck: sleep in the bed or the rear cabin

The Cybertruck manual gives the bed floor as 71.84 × 51.00 in (1,825 × 1,295 mm). Tesla's page calls it a 6 × 4 ft bed. The manual gives a maximum bed height of 28.66 in (728 mm) at the front and 19.84 in (504 mm) at the rear on the AWD and Cyberbeast trucks. The powered tonneau cover turns the bed into what Tesla calls "a six-foot vault". The cover can open fully or partly.

Tesla's Cybertruck mattress goes in the bed, not the cabin, and Tesla says that it works with the CyberTent. The manual describes Camp Mode on the Cybertruck as cabin temperature control plus power for the USB ports and low-voltage outlets.

In the rear cabin, the seat cushions fold up in two sections. The seat backs do not fold flat. Havnby's SnugNest pad is made for that back seat. The Cybertruck mattress guide compares the bed and cabin options.

How to choose a Tesla for camping

  • Your height. Compare your height, plus a pillow, with the Tesla mattress length in the table. Third-party Model Y mattresses are 193 to 205 cm long, so they can add length over Tesla's own.
  • Two sleepers. The Tesla mattresses are 127 to 131 cm wide. For one sleeper, a narrow mattress such as the Havnby FlatCore Solo (80 cm wide) leaves room for bags.
  • Getting in and out. A liftgate gives a large opening for access and air at the back. A sedan trunk lid gives a smaller one, so in a Model 3 you use the rear doors more.
  • New or used. You can order a new Model 3, Model Y, Model Y L or Cybertruck. A Model X or Model S comes from inventory or the used market, and you need a third-party mattress.
  • Power and climate. Camp Mode is on all five models. Read the Tesla Camp Mode guide and the Tesla camping charging guide before a first trip.

Tesla camping car questions

Is the Model Y good for camping?

Yes. Tesla's Model Y page names camping equipment and Camp Mode for a night in the car. The 7-seat Model Y also folds its third row, so you keep a flat cargo area.

Model 3 or Model Y for camping?

Tesla's Model 3 mattress (2024+) is 19 cm longer than its Model Y mattress. The Model Y gives 70.8 cu ft (2,004 L) of cargo with the seats folded. The Model 3 manual gives no folded figure. Compare the mattresses for both cars in our Model Y vs Model 3 mattress guide.

Model X or Model Y for camping?

The Model X liftgate opens to about 2.5 m (8 ft), against about 2.3 m (7.5 ft) on the Model Y. The Model X also has more cargo volume. Tesla sells no Model X mattress, and you can buy the car only from inventory or used.

Cybertruck or Model Y for camping?

The Cybertruck gives you a bed with a 71.84 in (1,825 mm) floor length and a Tesla mattress that works with the CyberTent. The Model Y gives you a sleeping area inside the climate-controlled cabin. In the Cybertruck cabin, the rear cushions fold up and the seat backs stay upright.
