Fit is the strongest reason to choose it
A generic camping mattress can be comfortable and still waste space around the hatch trim or push against the doors. Tesla’s own mattress is designed around the Model Y cargo outline. The official installation photographs show a broad sleeping surface that fills the rear of the cabin without an obviously rectangular overhang.
That does not prove that the floor becomes perfectly level. Tesla’s listing says the mattress fits snugly across the folded seats and trunk, but it does not describe a dedicated wedge, independent leveling chamber or adjustable slope-correction layer. Park on a reasonably level site and check the hip area before assuming the mattress alone will cancel every contour.
Foam filling changes the feel, but evidence is limited
The three-inch foam filling should make this more stable and less bouncy than a hollow air bed. Foam can also spread pressure and reduce the cold, plastic feel of a basic inflatable. Those are construction implications, not results from our own sleep test. Tesla does not state the foam density, internal chamber design or insulation value, so comparisons with self-inflating camping mats should remain cautious.
The waterproof polyester exterior is practical around shoes, condensation and damp campsites. “Waterproof” does not mean the mattress should be stored wet. Wipe it down, let both sides dry and inspect the seams before packing. Tesla includes repair patches, which is useful evidence that puncture care is part of normal ownership.
Pump and packing questions Tesla does not fully answer
The included 12V adapter makes setup dependent on the car’s power outlet rather than a separate rechargeable battery. That is simple if you always inflate beside the vehicle. It is less flexible if you want to use the mattress elsewhere or pack it while the cable route is blocked by luggage.
