What Camp Mode actually provides
Tesla's owner manual says Camp Mode can maintain cabin climate, power USB and low-voltage outlets and keep the touchscreen available while the vehicle is in Park. That makes an overnight stay practical, but it is not an unattended safety system or a promise that every location allows vehicle sleeping.
Four checks before an overnight stay
- Permission: use a booked campsite or another location whose posted rules explicitly allow overnight vehicle occupancy.
- Charge: plan enough reserve for changing weather and the drive to a charger; Tesla does not publish a universal overnight percentage.
- Monitoring: confirm the app can connect and check that climate remains active. Do not rely on connectivity as the only safeguard.
- Exit and security: keep doors and an exit path clear. Tesla notes that Sentry Mode, the vehicle alarm and Walk-Away Door Lock are inactive in Camp Mode, so lock deliberately.
Tesla also advises against using Camp Mode at low charge and says the app can notify you if climate turns off. Read the current Tesla climate-control manual for the behavior in your software version.
Bottom line
Sleeping in the car can be reasonable when the site is legal, an alert adult remains inside, the vehicle is healthy and there is a conservative battery and weather plan. Camp Mode reduces friction; it does not remove personal responsibility.
