How Do You Use Tesla Camp Mode?

By Fredrik Mastouri · Updated July 23, 2026
Short answer: With the Tesla in Park, open the Climate controls and select Camp from the parked-climate options. Set a sensible temperature, confirm Camp is active, deliberately lock the car and monitor charge and alerts. The exact screen layout can change with software updates, so use the current in-car owner manual if the control has moved.

Camp Mode setup in five steps

  1. Park legally and level: use a designated campsite or a location that explicitly permits overnight vehicle occupancy.
  2. Prepare before making the bed: move the front seats, fold the rear seats and keep at least one exit clear.
  3. Turn on Camp: while in Park, open Climate and select Camp from the parked-climate choices.
  4. Set and verify: choose the temperature and fan settings, then confirm the screen still shows Camp as active.
  5. Lock and monitor: lock deliberately, keep the phone charged and watch the Tesla app for climate or vehicle alerts.

Tesla changes interface details through software updates. If the steps on your screen differ, search for “Camp” in the current in-car owner manual rather than following an old screenshot.

What Camp Mode keeps running

Tesla's Model Y manual says Camp Mode can maintain the cabin temperature, power USB and low-voltage outlets and keep the touchscreen available while the vehicle is in Park. That supports an occupied camping setup, but it is not an unattended life-safety system.

Camp Mode also changes security behavior. Tesla says Sentry Mode, the vehicle alarm and Walk-Away Door Lock are disabled while Camp is active. Lock the doors yourself and choose a site where that reduced security posture is acceptable.

Battery and Low Power Mode

There is no honest universal “one night uses X percent” answer. HVAC load changes with weather, set temperature, wind, sun, occupants and vehicle condition. Current Tesla guidance says Camp becomes unavailable when the car enters Low Power Mode. On current Model Y software, the automatic Low Power threshold can be set from 10% to 20%, with 20% as the default described by Tesla.

Before-you-sleep checklist

CDC warns that fuel-burning camping equipment can produce fatal carbon monoxide in enclosed spaces. Opening a window is not a safe workaround. Use the car's electric climate system and appropriate bedding instead.

Primary sources

Camp Mode behavior and Low Power Mode limits were checked against Tesla's current Model Y climate-control manual and Low Power Mode guidance on 22 July 2026. Carbon-monoxide guidance comes from the CDC. Always follow the manual in your own vehicle and current local site rules.
