Why the windows fog overnight
Breathing, damp clothing, shoes and wet bedding add water vapor to a small cabin. When humid cabin air meets colder glass, moisture condenses. Two sleepers usually create more moisture than one, and the effect becomes more visible when the outside temperature drops.
Condensation does not automatically mean the car is leaking. It is a moisture-balance problem: reduce the amount brought inside, keep air moving and use the vehicle's dehumidifying climate system.
The practical overnight setup
- Remove wet sources: place damp coats, towels and shoes in a sealed bin or sheltered area outside the sleep zone.
- Use Camp Mode: keep the cabin climate operating and leave air conditioning available so the system can dehumidify instead of using fan-only heat.
- Move air across glass: direct the front vents toward the windshield or side glass where fog appears.
- Keep the intake open: Tesla says outside air enters through the grille in front of the windshield, so keep it clear of leaves, snow and other debris.
- Avoid excess humidity: do not cook, boil water, hang wet gear or breathe inside a zipped sleeping bag in the vehicle.
- Dry the cabin in the morning: wipe pooled moisture with a microfiber cloth and run climate before packing bedding away.
Should you crack a window?
A small window opening can add passive airflow when weather, insects, security and site rules make it sensible. It is not always necessary when the climate system is actively managing the cabin, and it does not replace Camp Mode monitoring. Use fitted rain guards or screens only if they do not interfere with window operation, seals or safe exit.
Do not interpret a cracked window as protection against a fuel-burning heater or camp stove. CDC warns never to use portable gas camp stoves, charcoal or similar combustion equipment indoors or in a camper. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless, and ventilation through a small opening is not a safe control.
Cold-weather details
- Keep snow and ice away from the windshield intake and doors.
- Use dry, weather-appropriate bedding so cabin heat is not the only fallback.
- Do not block vents with pillows, luggage or the mattress.
- Plan charge conservatively because heating and dehumidification use energy.
- If visibility is fogged before driving, fully clear every required window and mirror first.
What Tesla says about moisture
Tesla's climate guidance notes that slight windshield fog can be normal in very humid conditions and that water from air-conditioning dehumidification drains underneath the car. A small odorless puddle under a parked Tesla after climate use can therefore be normal; liquid color, odor, warning messages or persistent leaks require a different diagnosis.
Bottom line
The best condensation plan is dry gear plus continuous, monitored electric climate control and unobstructed airflow. Carry two microfiber cloths: one for the glass and one kept dry as a backup. Never pack damp bedding into a sealed bag for storage, and never use combustion as an indoor heat source.
