Tesla Camping Mattress Physical Test Protocol
A mattress is labeled hands-on tested only after the named product unit and vehicle complete this protocol. Until then, every product page remains secondary research and every unmeasured result stays unknown.
What a valid test record must identify
Each record names the exact mattress SKU and batch, vehicle model, model year or generation, seat configuration, wheel or trim factors that affect cargo geometry, tester, location, dates, ambient conditions and any accessories used. “Model Y compatible” is not a substitute for an identified vehicle.

Vehicle fit and usable sleeping geometry
Fit is measured separately in each vehicle configuration. The record reports usable head, shoulder, hip and foot width; usable length with the hatch closed; mattress depth; lowest roof clearance above the loaded mattress; seat-fold height transition; and side or hatch interference.
- Measure the empty cargo geometry three times and publish the median plus range.
- Install the mattress exactly as instructed without forcing panels or closing the hatch on soft goods.
- Load the surface with the documented sleeper mass, then repeat length, width, depth and clearance measurements.
- Mark every gap, unsupported edge, obstruction and incompatible configuration in photographs and the raw sheet.
Leveling, setup, pump and pack-down
Setup and pack-down are timed from the same start and finish states across three runs after one untimed familiarization run. We publish all three times, not only the fastest. A digital inclinometer records surface angle at the head, torso, hip and foot positions before and after leveling.

Sleep, temperature and condensation observations
A comfort conclusion requires named sleepers, body dimensions, sleep position, bedding, firmness setting, cabin setting and at least three documented nights. Subjective reports are attributed to the tester and never converted into a universal score. Temperature and humidity loggers record cabin air and the mattress interface at fixed intervals; observations do not create an R-value.
Testing stops if vehicle guidance, weather, battery state, ventilation, fire safety or the tester’s judgment makes continuation unsafe. Camp Mode and any battery calculation remain secondary controls; the vehicle and official guidance govern the session.
Storage, leakage and 30-night durability
The record documents where the packed unit fits while driving, what cargo remains usable and whether panels close normally. Inflatable products get a documented 8-hour pressure-loss observation under stable conditions. Durability conclusions require a 30-night log plus inspection of seams, valves, foam recovery, cover, pump, fasteners and storage bag; shorter use is labeled an initial observation.
How results will be published
Every hands-on article will link its raw record, show the exact tested unit and vehicle, separate measurements from vendor claims, state material limitations and preserve failed observations. Corrections receive a dated change note. Affiliate status cannot remove an unfavorable result or turn an unmeasured claim into a finding.
