What each one actually does

A sleeping bag is a thermal envelope. It traps body heat and protects from cold. It does not provide cushioning; modern bags use very thin insulation that compresses to almost nothing under body weight.

A Tesla camping mattress is a structural bridge. It fills the gaps in the folded seats, levels the slope, and provides 4-19 cm of cushion above the hard surface. It does not provide thermal insulation beyond minor R-value.

Most Tesla campers use both: mattress for cushion, sleeping bag for warmth. The two complement; they don't substitute.

What happens with sleeping bag only

Without a mattress, the seat seams telegraph through within 30 minutes. Hip and shoulder pressure on the hard surface causes pain within 2-3 hours. The 4° forward slope makes you slide toward the front. Most owners give up on this approach within one trip.

What happens with mattress only

A Tesla mattress alone works well in 18-25°C nights. Below 15°C, you'll be cold without a sleeping bag or comforter. The mattress provides comfort but minimal warmth.
